I have been lucky enough in my career to have worked with some big brands, these brands ensured strict adherence to their CI and Brand Guideline material. In fact having said that I think one of the most important rules when starting any project, is to fully understand the product and the brand it represents, know he rules and fully understand what you can and cannot do.
Once this becomes the norm, your task can be easily achieved without the arduous "back n fourth" time wasting changes.
